The Urgency of Action: Holding Government Accountable in the Age of AI

In a recent communication with Rep. Byron Donalds, I encountered the courteous yet non-committal language that too often characterizes our leaders' responses to urgent issues. While I appreciate Rep. Donalds’ assurance that my concerns about AI's impact on the workforce will be considered, the phrase “keep your thoughts in mind” is emblematic of a broader, more alarming trend of inaction.

“Dear Mr. Bihan-Poudec,

Thank you for reaching out to me regarding your concerns on AI's impact on the workforce. As Congress addresses AI in hearings and legislation this congress, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind. Additionally, please let me know if I can be of any assistance in the future. Take care.
Sincerely,

Rep. Byron Donalds
Member of Congress”

Who loves AI?

Who is willing to deal with the ethical guidelines of AI?

Who is wiling to take responsability for the decisions of the algorithms?

Accompanying this post is a poignant cartoon that reflects a disturbing disconnect. It depicts the fading willingness to engage with the increasingly crucial conversations about AI ethics and responsibility as the questions become more pressing and the implications more severe. This satirical illustration highlights a grave reality: our collective enthusiasm for technological advancement is not matched by a commitment to addressing the ethical guidelines required to govern such technologies.

The lack of immediate action by our government in the face of AI and automation's unchecked growth is deeply concerning. While AI presents extraordinary opportunities, it also poses significant risks, especially to the American workforce. The rapid implementation of AI technologies without robust ethical checks could drastically alter our economy and the livelihoods of millions.

Words like “keep your thoughts in mind” are no longer sufficient. The time for reflection has passed; the time for action is now. The stakes are high, and the potential for harm is too great to be pacified by mere assurances. The slow pace of our government's response could metaphorically lead to having "blood on their hands," as the livelihoods and well-being of citizens are compromised by inaction.

We need our representatives, those entrusted with the welfare of our nation, to step forward with decisiveness. We call for immediate and proactive measures to establish ethical guidelines for AI and automation. The safeguarding of our nation’s economy and the protection of American workers cannot be deferred. The people in charge must act now, before the alarming predictions of displaced workers due to the unchecked implementation of artificial intelligence become a stark reality.
